Quick Start Guide for Students
Welcome to The New School! We are excited to help you join our academic community and access the tools and resources you’ll need to connect and collaborate throughout your learning experience. Our Quick Start Guide will help you set up the technologies, systems, and software you’ll use most. Get started using the instructions below.
Before You Arrive on Campus
Claim your New School Account
- Every student receives a New School account. This account helps you access many New School services.
- To claim your account, follow the New School Account Setup Guide. You will need your N-Number, which is sent to your personal email when you are accepted into the university.
- To ensure your account remains secure, you will be required to enroll in DUO multi-factor authentication.
Sign into MyNewSchool
- MyNewSchool is the student portal where you can find important information and services.
- After 24 hours of claiming your account, log in to MyNewSchool to explore.
Sign into Your New School Email
- Your New School email is where you will receive important messages from the university.
- Log in as soon as you can after claiming your account.
- Learn more about Gmail and other Google services.
When You Arrive on Campus
Connect to the New School Wireless Network
- Connect to the “newschool” wifi network when you arrive.
- If you live in the dorms, ask your Resident Advisors for wifi instructions.
Download Software You Will Need
- Different academic programs may need different software. Check with your professors about what software you will need access to. Where available the New School has access to deals and discounts on certain software and hardware.
- Some software will not be available for download until the first day of classes.
- Check out essential software provided by Information Technology as well as deals for additional hardware and software.
Prepare for Printing
- If you need to print on campus, set up your devices first.
- If you plan on printing from your personal laptop on campus, download the laptop printing software.
- Download the Pharos Print app for Apple or Android devices then set up the app on your phone following these instructions. This is required to release print jobs at printers on campus.

Explore Information Technology Spaces
There are many tech spaces on campus where you can get help and use computers. Look for technology labs, the Equipment Center, and IT Central.
