Beginning in 2019, Oracle began licensing Oracle Java, which requires a paid license. Given this new licensing requirement, it is important to ensure that no licensable version of Oracle Java is installed on any university computing devices, unless it is installed as part of a third party application that has a licensing agreement for the distribution of Oracle Java for use with their software. Any installation of Oracle Java without explicit permission from Information Technology will be uninstalled automatically to meet these requirements.
If you are unsure if you have Oracle Java installed on your computer, please reach out to IT Central. If you have a version of Java installed on your university provided computer that is needed for a particular application, reach out to IT Central to determine what Java version you are using.
Versions of Oracle Java that require licensing should not be downloaded or installed on any university computing device. If you need a version of Java for a particular use case, IT Central can provide guidance on how to proceed.
The following alternative versions of Java are available at no-cost and may be downloaded as needed:
- Windows - Amazon Corretto, Adopt OpenJDK
- Linux - Red Hat Provided OpenJDK, Amazon Corretto, Adopt OpenJDK
- Mac - Amazon Corretto, Adopt OpenJDK
